WHO: Gaza’s Acute Food Insecurity is Unprecedented

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed serious concern about the levels of acute food insecurity in Gaza Strip, which is unprecedented in recent history, warning that malnutrition in Gaza Strip continues and has reached starvation.

Dr. Richard Peeperkorn and Dr. Ahmed Daher, head of the World Health Organization’s Gaza sub-office, explained during a videoconference in Geneva that no one in Gaza is safe from famine. The International Classification of Food Security, the most reliable analysis in this area, indicates that more than half a million people, or a quarter of the Gaza population, face what experts classify as catastrophic hunger conditions.

The WHO stressed that the lack of safety guarantees and humanitarian corridors in Gaza makes it more difficult to carry out humanitarian operations safely and quickly, stressing that the lack of continuous access to hospitals may lead to the dismantling of the entire health system.

The Israeli occupation forces continue their brutal aggression on Gaza Strip for the 119th day, targeting all aspects of life, infrastructure and hospitals amid an unjust and severe blockade imposed on the people of the Strip.
