WHO: Corona pandemic could end as a pandemic this year

Geneva, (ST) – WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus has declared that the coronavirus pandemic could end as an emergency and as a pandemic this year.

In a statement published on the organization’s website, Ghebreyesus said that the weekly number of deaths due to the Corona virus has become, for the first time, less than the number when the pandemic was declared. He added: I am confident that at some point this year we will be able to say that Covid 19 has ended as an emergency from In terms of public health at the international level and as a pandemic.

Ghebreyesus pointed out the need to learn from what the world faced during the pandemic so as not to repeat the “neglect panic cycle” that has always characterized pandemic response measures.

It is noteworthy that in December 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of an unknown pneumonia disease in Wuhan, central China, to spread later as a global epidemic that claimed the lives of more than 7 million people.
