WH O: The largest hospital in Gaza has turned into a structure filled with corpses

Geneva, (ST) – The World Health Organization (WHO) condemned the massive destruction inflicted by the Israeli occupation entity on the largest hospital in Gaza Strip, turning it into an empty structure except for the corpses.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated in a post on the “X” platform: “The World Health Organization and its partners managed to access the Al-Shifa complex, which was once the backbone of the health system in Gaza and is now an empty structure except for the human graves after the recent siege.”

He explained that “restoring the minimum operational capacity in the short term seems unlikely” and that a thorough assessment is needed by an engineering team to determine whether the remaining buildings are safe for future use.

Tedros added: Of the 36 main hospitals in Gaza, only 10 are partially functioning, and that there is a need to take urgent measures in Gaza with the looming famine, the spread of diseases, and the increase in traumatic injuries. He expressed his regret that the efforts made by the organization and other relief organizations to resume services the basic needs of Al-Shifa Hospital were in vain.

Tedros also renewed the call to protect the remaining health facilities in Gaza and protect health and humanitarian workers. He called for unhindered access of humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip and a ceasefire.
