According to a European Union document reported by Reuters today, diplomats from the 27 member states of the European Union recommended taking rapid measures to suspend restrictions in sectors essential to economic stability and begin rebuilding the economy in Syria, such as those related to energy and transportation.
The diplomats, who are a part of a group examining the EU’s foreign policy positions on issues related to the Middle East and North Africa, also recommended evaluating options for reopening banking and investment relations with Syria.
The EU foreign ministers are scheduled to discuss the issue during a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
The EU foreign policy chief, Kaya Kallas, recently expressed her hope for a political agreement on easing sanctions on Syria.
