Western countries used cross-border aid mechanism to violate Syria’s sovereignty: Moscow

MOSCOW, (ST)- The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed in a statement on Monday that the Western countries have used the cross-border aid mechanism as a tool to violate Syria’s sovereignty.

“According to the International Humanitarian Law, aid should be delivered in consultation with the government of the concerned country. The Syrian government has officially asked the United Nations to put an end to cross-border aid operations, and starting from commitment to Syria’s sovereignty independence and territorial integrity, the international community should respect the Syrian government’s call and take it into consideration,” the ministry said.

“Based on this fact, the Russian side prepared and submitted a draft resolution calling for extending the mechanism of transporting humanitarian aid to Syria across two borders in Idleb for six months only. However, our partners in the West opposed the draft resolution motivated by political considerations not by the humanitarian needs of civilians in Syria,” the ministry added.

It said that the west has imposed coercive economic measures on Syria also to undermine its sovereignty.

According to the ministry, this behavior by Washington hampers specifying the funding necessary for reconstruction in Syria, including rebuilding houses, schools, hospitals and infrastructure which all are important for the return of the Syrians displaced because of terrorism.

Also in its statement, the Russian ministry criticized Washington’s procedures to control and steal Syrian oil and keep the illegal presence of its troops in the Syrian territories.

It pointed out that the United States is stealing and illicitly trafficking Syrian oil under the sight of the international community, stressing that the U.S. and its allies are maintaining their illegal presence in Syria for this purpose (stealing Syrian oil).

Such acts provide clear evidence that the US and its allies seek violating other countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, politicizing humanitarian issues and exploiting civilians’ needs, the ministry concluded.
