Weapons Smuggled across Turkish-Syrian Borders Used in Terror Attack on Hemimim Airbase: Experts

MOSCOW, (ST)- Russian experts have stressed that the terror attack that targeted Hemimim airbase in Lattakia on December 31 was carried out by means of weapons smuggled across the Turkish-Syrian borders.

The “Vestnik Mordovia” website quoted a team of military experts as saying that “the terrorist shelling of Hmeimim airbase was done by the use of a Soviet “Vasilok” mortars which dates back to the 1950s and which is still being used by many armies of the world and being produced by Russia.”

The website added that “the Syrian army doesn’t possess such kind of weapon and this proves that the terrorists have received this weapon through smuggling across Turkey. It asserted that Washington is behind the attack on Hmeimim airbase.

On December 31, the airbase was the target of a terrorist attack that killed two Russian soldiers working in the airbase, according to the Russian Defense Ministry which yesterday denied media reports about alleged destruction of seven Russian military aircrafts by terrorist groups.
