Washington’s Mideast policy backfires on US – expert

If the Syrian government  falls, it will be the biggest security threat for the United States, as in that case Syria would become a safe haven for terrorists of all sorts. The warning came from former CIA deputy director Michael Morell in his recent interview with the Wall Street Journal. Morell, who has been with the CIA for more than 30 years, fears that if “al-Qaeda” wins in Syria, America may face serious problems.

Political observer Yevgeny Yermolayev argues that it’s not just a matter of Syria. American Middle Eastern policy is beginning to backfire on the United States in nearly all Arab countries Washington has taken under its wing.

“More than 4,000 people have been killed in terror attacks and armed clashes in Iraq since the beginning of the year. Local observers say that Iraq is on the brink of a civil war. Things aren’t any better in Libya where a sluggish civil war lingers. Groups of militants operating in Libya have become uncontrollable.”

In Syria, the situation may be even worse. Iraq, Libya and Syria have each suffered either military intervention or tough pressure by the United States and its allies. Had it happened in just one country, it could have been a chance occurrence. But if the same scenario repeats itself elsewhere, this is already a trend.

Western elites have apparently devised a new development model for countries of the Middle East and North Africa. The idea is to install amorphous local governments incapable of ruling and totally relying on the West. Yet, this policy is beginning to backfire as the region unpredictably slips out of control. That’s why Morell is ringing the alarm bell.

Therefore, the West will struggle to retain military and political control over strategically important parts of the world, above all the Middle East and North Africa, which makes talk of America losing interest in the region absolute rubbish.
