Voting starts in Algeria to choose the country’s president

ALGIERS, SEP.7, (ST)- Today, polling stations in Algeria opened  at 8 AM (local time), allowing voters to choose the country’s president from among three prospective candidates.

Algerians will decide between independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, candidate Youcef Aouchiche from the Socialist Forces Front party, and candidate Abdelali Hassani Cherif from the Movement of Society for Peace party.

The Independent Authority for Elections in Algeria has allocated approximately 63,000 polling stations and nearly 500,000 officials to serve over 24 million voters. The three candidates presented their electoral programs during a 20-day campaign window.

Voting will continue throughout the day until 7 PM (local time). After the polling stations close, the counting of votes will start to determine the winner of the early presidential election, who will lead the country for a five-year term.

Last Monday, Members of Algerian communities abroad started to vote and they will continue voting until today, as the electoral college of the Algerian community abroad includes 865,490 voters.
