Volunteer team honors participants in Syria environment festival

The volunteer ‘mosaic’ team has honored the participants in the national environmental festival recently held by State Ministry for Environment Affairs.

The honoring ceremony, held in al-Hamraa Theater in Damascus Wednesday, aims at encouraging youth to protect environment and to take part in voluntary work.

A film on the importance of protecting environment and the role of community in disseminating environmental awareness among youth and children was screened during the ceremony.

About 250 saplings were planted in al-Qarmani garden in Damascus by children during the environmental festival.

Environmental science week

The ceremony held on Wednesday coincided with the fourth day of the environmental science week being organized by State Ministry for Environment Affairs and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The participants in the science week discussed today the effect of the crisis on bio-diversity, forests and natural reserves in Syria.

“The Syrian government works on updating the national strategy and plan of protecting bio-diversity drawn up in 2011 in order to cope with the U.N. goals in this regard,” State Minister for Environment Affairs Nazira Sarkis said during today’s session of the science week.

She called for reaching solutions to deal with the challenges that face sustainability and human well-being, such as poverty, food safety and protection of environment.

The environmental science week kicked off last Sunday to analyze the environmental effects resulted from the five-year-old crisis.

Syria has joined all international agreements and protocols related to environment protection.
