Volodin: The joint work to combat terrorism in Syria contributed to enhancing security in the region

On January 23rd, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin affirmed that joint action to combat terrorism in Syria has contributed to strengthening security in the region as a whole.

“The war against terrorism is only part of the joint efforts of Russia and Iran for a peaceful future,” Volodin said during a press conference with Iranian Shura Council Speaker Muhammad Baqer Qalibaf in Tehran.

Volodin added: “Russia and Iran today are successfully resisting the international expansion of the United States and NATO.”

He indicated that “Washington and its allies want to stop the development of our countries, interfere in our internal affairs and spread misleading information about Russia and Iran”.

He underlined that “attempts to destabilize the security and stability of our two countries, as happened in the riots that took place in Iran last year, are doomed to failure, and our countries will not submit to dictates from abroad”.

He stressed that Russia and Iran jointly adhere to the principles of sovereign equality, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and support multipolarity and a just world order for the benefit of our peoples.

For his part, Qalibaf stressed the need to deepen relations and pursue a specific strategy in the path of cooperation with Russia, through the success of the work of the Joint Parliamentary Higher Committee.

Qalibaf added: “Given the depth of Iranian-Russian relations, these opportunities must be taken advantage of at the international level to address dangers and threats, especially in the face of the unfair US embargo on Iran, Russia and some other countries.”

Qalibaf explained that Iran’s priorities are to deepen cooperation with neighboring countries, including the Russian Federation.

He said that the areas of cooperation that will be focused on include banking cooperation between the two countries, transportation and transit facilities, goods exchange and customs control, as well as investment in the field of oil and gas.
