Visiting European MPs Say They Support Syria’s Call for Lifting Unfair European Sanctions Imposed on Syrians
DAMASCUS– A delegation of European parliament members, led by Vice-President for the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament Javier Couso, started today a two-day visit to Syria.
The delegation had a meeting with Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Hadiyeh Abbas during which the two sides discussed the latest developments in Syria and the world.
The PA Speaker Hadiyeh Abbas called for unifying international efforts to fight terrorism and implement the international Security Council resolutions relating to combating terrorism, drying up terrorism financial resources and putting an end to terrorism flow into Syria across borders.
She asserted that Syria has repeatedly announced that it is open to cooperation with all regional and international efforts aiming at countering terrorism, pointing out that cooperation between Syria, Russia and Iran in this respect has achieved notable gains in the battle against terrorist organizations.
The borderless terrorism spreading in the region and which targeted Paris, Brussels, Ankara and the united States under different names, “is the legitimate child of the extremist wahhabi thinking being promoted by the regime of Al Saud in the world,” according to Abbas.
The PA speaker went on to say that “the unfair European economic sanctions against the Syrian people have affected Syria’s ability to meet the needs of its citizens of medicines, fuel and food,” calling for the immediate lifting of theses sanctions and urging the European parliamentarians to support this just call.
On his part, Couso said he supported Syria’s call for lifting the unjust European economic sanctions imposed on the Syrian people, stressing his condemnation of the US and European arrogant and aggressive behavior against the world’s countries.
He affirmed his rejection of western countries’ interference in the internal affairs of all countries of the world.
“We’ll spare no effort as to convey real image about events in Syria to the European Parliament and we hope that our visit to Syria will open the way for new visits by other European parliamentarians to the country,” Couso said.
He pointed out that the “terrorism currently hitting Syria is the same kind of terrorism that claimed the lives of innocent people in Spain in 2004.”
The guest delegation arrived in Damascus Saturday morning and it is due to visit displaced people at temporary sheltering centers and wounded army personnel at Hamish Hospital in Damascus.
