Vershinin: American presence in Syria is illegal

MOSCOW, (ST)- Russia has stressed that the American presence in Syria is illegal.

 In an online interview with the Russian news Agency (TASS) on Friday, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said “we have repeatedly said that US presence in Syria is illegal. Their presence in the al-Jazira region in the northeast of Syria is illegitimate. The fact that they are assisting in plundering the oil resources that belong to the Syrian people is unacceptable. The fact that they continue to hold the 55-kilometer wide Al-Tanf area is absolutely illegal.”

 He affirmed that Moscow kept calling on Washington to put an end to such unilateral actions.

Vershinin pointed out that Russia and the United States maintain contacts, particularly through military and diplomatic channels despite differences on several issues.

 On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated that any presence of foreign troops in Syria without the consent of the Syrian government violates the Security Council Resolution No. 2254 as well as the principles of the international law.
