Venezuela and Cuba deplore funding terrorism in Syria

NEW YORK,(ST)_ Venezuela and Cuba strongly condemned backing terrorists in Syria, calling for respecting Syria’s sovereignty and not meddling in its internal affairs.

SANA reported that representatives of Venezuela and Cuba to the UN Security Council have denounced that some states are funding and supporting terrorist groups in Syria.

Addressing a Security Council session on peace-keeping operation, Jorge Valero, Venezuela representative wondered how some states could claim combatting terrorism and the same time offer all forms of support to it in Syria?

He called for ceasing violence to bring about a political solution to the ongoing crisis through dialogue, noting that the political plan proposed by President Bashar al-Assad is a realistic solution.

For his part, Cuba’s representative, Oscar Leon, said: “The UN Security Council must be an instrument to enhance peace not violence, avoid instability, not funding armed groups to destabilize states.”

He stressed that Cuba rejects using the term ‘protecting civilians’ to achieve geo-political goals, asserting the Syrian people’s right of self-determination without foreign intervention.

As for the Palestinian cause, the two representatives underscored need to reach a just solution to it and put an end to Israel’s illegal practices against the Palestinian people.

Cuba’s representative said: “The main political problem in the Middle East is Israel’s systematic aggression against the Palestinians.”
