TEHRAN, (ST)- Ali Akbar Velayati, International Adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution has urged Turkey to respect the option of the Syrian people and their decision to chose their own government.
In a statement to Tasnim news agency on Saturday, Velayati said” despite political differences between Iran and Turkey on some issues like the crisis in Syria we hope that Turkey would also come to respect the vote of the Syrian people and their decision to choose their own government.”
He emphasized that President Bashar Al-Assad was elected by the Syrian people and “he would not have been able to resist an international war for more than five years had he lacked the support of his people.”
Velayati pointed out that Turkey is Iran’s neighbor and military coups “would lead to distancing the country from progress, justice and democracy, so we don’t support such practices.”
Last night, Turkey witnessed a coup attempt aiming to overthrow the regime of Recepe Tayyib Erdogan. A group of the Turkish military took control over some sites before Erdogan forces carry out a crackdown against them.
