On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which falls on the 25th of November of each year, the branches of the Syrian Family Planning Association and Al-Berr and Social Services in Daraa launched activities and events within the “16 Days of Elimination of Violence against Women” campaign that will continue until the 10th of December.
According to Head of the Family Planning Association branch, Nujud Khalil, the campaign includes awareness sessions to introduce the campaign which concentrates on topics like sexual harassment, methods of dealing with psychological stress, early marriage and its impact on depriving girls of education and work, sexual health and women’s rights in law.
The coordinator of the Family Planning Association branch, Nour Bermo, indicated that the branch launched slogans accompanying the campaign, with the aim of addressing gender-based violence as it is everyone’s responsibility. She indicated that the branch implemented, in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, an awareness session that included introducing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The session also included a legal awareness session by lawyer Reem Suleiman on the issue of harassment, the rights and duties of women, and what is stipulated in Syrian law.
She added: The branch, in partnership with the Women’s Support and Empowerment Center affiliated to the Family Planning Association branch, presented a theatrical performance under the title “Cyber Violence.”
Psychological supporter Hazar Ahmed presented topics related to the concept of gender-based violence, its types and causes, and the roles that women play in society.
The Women’s Support and Empowerment Center launched an initiative to make roses on the occasion of the campaign, to be distributed to women. Each rose carries a message from the campaign.
The managing director of Al-Birr Association and Social Services, Muhammad Qtifan, pointed out that the association, under the slogan “Hand in hand, let us eliminate violence, because the elimination of violence is our responsibility,” held a 16-day campaign to combat gender-based violence, an introductory session on violence, its forms, causes, and possible means to reduce it.
