The American writer in Newsweek Magazine Geoff LaMear has criticized the US military presence in Syria, stressing that the US forces mission, purportedly to fight ISIS in the country, has failed and it may turn into a catastrophe for the United States.
In an article published by the magazine on Monday, LaMear said that the US military intervention in Syria has failed in achieving its alleged goal and Washington has to face the fact that Syria has won.
“It’s also time to face reality: Assad has won the war. That’s not new information. U.S. decision makers must deal with reality as it is, not as they wish it to be,” the writer said.
LaMear also noted the falsehood of the American rhetoric under the administration of US President Donald Trump about withdrawal in 2019, stressing that the American presence was maintained in Syria.
“Despite its rhetoric about drawdowns in 2019, the Trump administration withdrew troops only to replace them shortly thereafter. The degree of actual drawdown was paltry—from 1,000 troops to 900. And while this rhetorical theatre may be politically useful, it does nothing to fix the strategic incoherence of the U.S. mission in Syria or to safeguard American troops there,” LaMear made it clear.
The writer concluded his article by calling on the US decision makers to pull out of Syria before the failure becomes a catastrophe.
A few days ago, the White House admitted that the US base in Al-Tanf area in Homs eastern countryside was targeted by a drone and missile attack.
