US State Department spokesman: President Trump will issue executive orders to lift sanctions on Syria
US State Department spokesman Michael Mitchell announced that President Donald Trump will issue executive orders to lift sanctions on Syria, bypassing some necessary legal procedures.
In a statement to the Syrian Al-Ekhbaria channel today, Mitchell explained that the Trump administration recognizes the extent of the suffering caused by the sanctions imposed on Syria. He acknowledged that the time has come to lift these sanctions, which were initially imposed on the Assad regime. Lifting the sanctions is seen as a way to provide the Syrian people with a chance for a better future and represents the first step toward improved relations between the United States and Syria.
Mitchell noted that there is no specific timetable for lifting the sanctions, as there are still some legal and administrative procedures to navigate. Some of the sanctions fall under executive authority, which will make the process easier, while others were enacted by Congress and will require its approval following additional administrative steps, as the procedures for Congress differ from President Trump’s executive authority.
The spokesman for the US State Department emphasized the significance of the ongoing situation in Syria, noting that it is an important country that deserves attention from all. He stated that it makes sense for Washington to engage in dialogue with its regional partners to support Syria, as its people are living a tragic situation and require assistance.
In this context, he highlighted that lifting sanctions could be an opportunity to enhance security and stability.
Mitchell expressed that the United States desires friendly relations with all countries globally, recalling that it had an embassy in Damascus for many years before its closure in 2012. He explained that reopening the embassy is a long-term goal for Washington, but there are several steps to complete before reaching that point.
Currently, the focus is on strengthening a new relationship with the Syrian government, which should act rationally and responsibly. He also mentioned that the Trump administration came away with a positive impression after it met with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in addition to collaborative efforts with regional partners aimed at paving the way toward this ultimate goal.
