US Progressives seek to block arms sale to Israel

A number of American Democrats called for stopping a new deal to sell American weapons to the Israeli occupation entity against the backdrop of the continued Israeli aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip.

Progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led efforts Wednesday to block US arms sales to Israel, a move that was unlikely to succeed but highlighted tensions among Democratic lawmakers grappling with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“At a time when so many, including President Biden, support a ceasefire, we should not be sending ‘direct attack’ weaponry to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu to prolong this violence,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.

American sources revealed on Wednesday that the administration of US President Joe Biden notified Congress of a new deal to sell weapons to the occupation entity, valued at $ 735 million. This deal is a fraction of the total US military aid that it provides to the Israeli occupation entity, as Washington pledged in 2016 to provide the occupation entity with military aid worth $ 38 billion between 2019 and 2020.
