US, NATO trigger global war over Russia: Analyst

Military buildup by the United States and NATO in preparation to confront Russia over the Ukraine crisis is likely to trigger a global war, an analyst writes in a column for the Press TV website.

“These reckless and dangerous actions have destroyed the Russian government’s trust in the West and are moving the world towards war,” Paul Craig Roberts wrote.

He said the US has been taking “provocative military moves” against Russia while NATO has been deploying military forces at Russia’s borders “in violation of the 1997 NATO-Russian treaty and the Montreux Convention.”

Roberts said the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are exacerbating tensions following Washington’s coup in Ukraine.

He said the “foolishness” of anti-Russia protesters, who thronged the streets following a call by American NGOS, is “setting the world on a path to Armageddon.”

US-Russia relations have turned sour since Crimea seceded from Ukraine last month to join Russia.

On Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry threatened Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with more economic sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

Washington has already imposed targeted sanctions on a Russian bank and officials in Putin’s inner circle over the tension.

Roberts said the US would be “another failed empire” should Russia ditch the dollar in its transactions.

“It is only a matter of time before it is universally recognized that the US is a failed state. Let’s pray this recognition occurs before the arrogant inhabitants of Washington blow up the world in pursuit of hegemony over others,” the analyst wrote.
