MOSCOW, (ST)-The western anti-terrorism coalition led by the United States adopts selectivity in striking the terrorists in Syria, because it refuses to hit “Jabhat al-Nusra” positions which are close to positions of other terrorist groups that must also be blacklisted by the Security Council, Vladimir Andreyev, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of New Challenges and Threats has underscored.
During the Russian Federation Council meeting on Thursday, Andreyev said “they don’t even target positions of “Jabhat al-Nusra” which was listed by the Security Council as a terrorist organization,” noting that Russia has suggested to place “Jaish al-Islam” and “Ahrar al-Sham” armed groups in the blacklist of the Security Council, but the suggestion was rejected by the U.S and some other countries which keep calling such groups as “moderate opposition.
In 2013, the Security Council decided to place Jabhat al-Nusra on the terrorist organizations’ list because of its link to al-Qaeda.
The Russian official pointed out that the western countries don’t have enough political will to fight terrorism and this is something that undermines every Russian suggestion to adopt tangible procedures against this dangerous phenomenon.
