DAMASCUS, (ST)_ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Walid Al-Mouallem, on Saturday met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Valerie Amos.
The two sides expressed satisfaction to reach agreement on the humanitarian response plan in Syria, that reflects the extent of positive cooperation between Syria and the United Nations.
Al-Mouallem commended efforts of the UN offices in Syria and urged Ms. Amos that cooperation with the UN to cover the restoration and rebuilding of what was destroyed by armed terrorist groups of the country ‘s infrastructure, hospitals, and so on.
He stressed that the sanctions imposed by the US and the EU on Syria are responsible for the suffering of Syrian citizens . He demanded UN to condemn these sanctions and to abolish them.
He emphasized the desire of the Syrian government to coordinate with the UN in order to deliver humanitarian aid to due beneficiaries who have suffered damages as a result of attacks by armed terrorist groups against public and private property.
For her part, Amos highly appreciated Syria ‘s humanitarian efforts in facilitating the tasks of the UN Office .
She asserted that the UN office in Damascus will continue providing humanitarian assistance in coordination with the Syrian government .
For his part, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Dr. Jasem Zakaria, discussed with Amos mechanism of cooperation relations between the government and UN humanitarian organizations .
In a statement to pressmen, the minister said that discussions dealt the support given by international organizations to Syria during the crisis and the efforts exerted by the higher relief agency to overcome difficulties impeding the delivery of aid to affected citizens.
In a similar meeting, the Minister of State for National Reconciliation, Dr. Ali Haidar, discussed with Amos the Humanitarian response plan in Syria and the role played by international organizations in this regard.
he told reporters, following the meeting that “ So far, international organizations did not provide required aid and are using the humanitarian aid for political purposes,” calling on these organizations to act with credibility in providing aid to the Syrian people through government institutions and NGOs working in the area of relief.
He stressed that the government is working on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to all affected Syrians, without exception, pointing out that in certain areas, the terrorists confiscate the aid before reaching those in need .
Replying a question on the proposed airlift to provide aid to certain areas in Aleppo, the minister stressed “ International organizations will have no role in implementing this airlift, but will be implemented by Syrian hands.”
