US Embassy in Baghdad suspends operations amid angry protests

BAGHDAD, (ST)- The US Embassy in Baghdad on Wednesday suspended all its public consular operations until further notice amid continuous protests and sit ins in front of the American Embassy in condemnation of the US aggression on the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces that claimed the lives of tens of fighters and wounded scores of others.

In a statement on Wednesday, the embassy warned US citizens against approaching the embassy’s headquarters.

It said that the American General Consulate in Arbeel is open for obtaining visas and for providing services to American citizens.

Over the past two days, hundreds of angry Iraqi protests gathered in front of the US Embassy in Baghdad calling for the embassy to be shut down and for expelling the US ambassador and demanded the US troops to leave Iraq.

The US forces fired tear gas on the protesters causing several  suffocation cases among them.
