US Demonizes Russia with Claims of Tampering Elections, Kremlin Says

The Kremlin says Washington is trying to demonize Russia with claims that it interfered with the 2016 US elections.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks in an interview with CNN, which was aired on Sunday.

Peskov stressed that there had been no manner of collaboration or serious communication with US President Donald Trump’s campaign last year.

“The fact that Russia is being demonized in that sense comes very strange to us. And we are really sorry about that,” he noted, according to Press TV.

He went on to add that the US is humiliating itself by claiming that a foreign country was even capable of interfering with the elections.

The US is a “huge country, a country number one, the most powerful country in the world, with a very, very stable political tradition and you say that a country can easily intervene and easily influence your electoral process. This is simply impossible.”

He added that Russia had seen no evidence over claims made by multiple US intelligence agencies that Moscow had interfered in the elections.

“What we have seen in open, a public part of a report by one of the agencies, special agencies, of the United States, and I would humbly say that it’s not a paper of a high quality in terms of being really trustful,” said Peskov in reference to a January report into alleged Russian cyber hacking activities.

In reference to meetings between Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and US Attorney General Jeff Sessions on two occasions before the elections, Peskov stressed that the envoy was just doing his job.

“He was talking about what is going on in the United States so we have a better understanding in Moscow. This is what is being performed by every ambassador of Russia abroad, every ambassador of the United States abroad, including in Moscow,” he said.
