WASHINGTON, (ST)-The US army has revealed its intention to provide additional weaponry to what Washington calls “moderate opposition in Syria.
Spokesman for the alleged U.S.-led coalition against the so-called “Islamic State” Colonel Steve Warren said in a statement published yesterday by the US “Newsweek” Magazine that the U.S. is moving towards providing more weapons to the “Syrian opposition forces”, claiming that these weapons are to be used in the fight against Deash (ISIL) in Syria.
Facts indicate that the weapons previously provided by Washington to the “moderate opposition” have ended up in the hands of the terrorists of “Jabhet al-Nousra”, al-Qaeda arm in Syria, or ISIL terrorist organization.
Asked whether the US army’s decision meant more air drops of arms and ammunition, Warren said “yes.”
The US remarks came a week after American officials had announced that Washington is to send special operations forces (about 20-50 soldiers) to Syria allegedly to advise what it calls “moderate opposition forces” in their fight against Daesh.
To avoid criticism over this escalation, the US President Barack Obama said the forces would not engage in front-line confrontation with Daesh.
