US Administration Doesn’t Have Right to Decide Destiny of Occupied Syrian Golan: Foreign Ministry

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Syria has urged Chief of the United Nations to issue an official statement explaining the international organization’s clear-cut stance on the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Arab Golan.

In a message to the UN Chief and President of the Security Council regarding US President Donald Trump’s irresponsible and dangerous statements  on the occupied Syrian Golan, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stressed that the occupied Syrian Golan is part and parcel of the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic and that the restoration of this strategic land to the Syrian sovereignty by all internationally-guaranteed means has been a priority of the Syrian national policy and an eternal right that will not be subjected to any kind of bargaining or concession.

The ministry affirmed that the arrogant US administration doesn’t have any right or mandate to decide the destiny of the occupied Syrian Golan and that any US recognition or procedure that targets Syria’s right to restore the Golan to the Syrian sovereignty is an illegitimate act of no effect and is a violation of United States’ commitments as a permanent member of the Security Council.

In a tweet on Thursday, Trump shamelessly said that it is time for the United States to “fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan, which, he claimed, “is of critical strategic and security importance to Israel and Regional Stability”.

The ministry said that Syria condemns in the strongest terms Trump’s statements, affirming that they threaten peace, security and stability in the Middle East and the entire world.

Trump’s statements, the ministry added, show Washington’s disrespect for international legitimacy and its violations of international resolutions which completely reject all the Israeli occupation government’s decisions and oppressive procedures regarding the Syrian Golan and consider them as null and void and of no legal effect.

The ministry called on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities in implementing the international resolutions which provide for forcing the Israeli occupation to withdraw from the occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4th 1967 lines, mainly resolutions Nos. 242, 338 and 497.
