UNSC adopts resolution on avoiding conflicts … Jaafari: UN Should not to interfere in Member states Affairs

New York, (ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar Jaafari stressed that international relations after one hundred years of the First World War are not promising, in not indicating that countries that have engaged in this war have had learned from that disaster, therefore that war was followed by a second world war which was more destructive and painful, pointing out that these policies lead international relations to chaos and lawlessness.

Jaafari said in a speech during a session of the UN Security Council on preserving international peace and security, that the establishment of the United Nations has not led, unfortunately, to the noble goal which it was created for in saving succeeding generations from the scourge of war as stated in the preamble to the UN Charter.

He pointed out that the suffering of our people has doubled due to repeated acts of armed aggression and military invasion that took place since then, most recently, of course, the aggression on Syria, Iraq, Libya, Gaza and elsewhere.

Jaafari indicated that the “Sykes-Picot” agreement had paved the way before the French occupation authorities to usurp Iskenderun from the Syrian territory and giving it to Turkey, which is still occupied today, thereby bribing the Turkish rulers not to join World War II on the side of Nazi Germany.

Jaafari said that the peoples of the region pay for the military invasion of Iraq in 2003, which was based on unilateral justification when the UNSC and the UN Secretary-General at the time refused its ratification and caused great sufferings to the people of the region.

He called on the UN to assume its responsibilities and play its due role in the framework of the principles of international law and the UN Charter provisions, particularly the principles of sovereign equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of its member states.

However, the UN Security Council adopted yesterday unanimously resolution 2171 on avoiding conflicts, provides for granting the UN Secretary-General more authority to contain tensions before escalation.
