UNRWA Hails Syria’s Support for Palestinian Refugees

DAMASCUS, (ST)-  Michael Kingsley Nyinah, Chief of the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) in Syria hailed the Syrian government’s support and assistance to the Palestinian refugees in the country.  

Kingsley, who was speaking on Sunday during a meeting with Minister of Education, Dr. Hazwan al-Waz, stressed that Syria treats the Palestinian refugees in the country on an equal footing with the Syrian citizens.

The UN official praised the government’s quick response and measures to provide requirements  of the educational process for the Palestinians, especially those displaced from their houses in al-Yarmouk refugee camp when the armed terrorist groups entered the area.

Kingsley  hailed steps taken by the Ministry of Education regarding the self-learning project, reiterating UNRWA’s readiness to provide necessary facilitations and support in this respect.

For his part, Minister al-Waz stressed that the ministry is keen to follow up and implement the self-learning project and to do its best to alleviate the suffering of the students who were not able to apply for their exams due to the ongoing events and extraordinary circumstances in the country. 

The minister reviewed the losses caused to the education sector because of terrorist groups’ acts of vandalism and robbery against education institutions, pointing out that the overall cost of the losses is estimated at SYP 98, 695 billion.

He said that 232 people working in the sector of education, in addition to 101 students were martyred, adding that 683 schools were also turned into temporary houses for displaced families.
