Unjust blockade on Syria should be lifted in order to improve the humanitarian conditions, says Abdollahian

Geneva, (ST) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian stressed the need to lift the unjust blockade imposed on Syria, in order to improve the humanitarian conditions there.

The Iranian news agency, IRNA, quoted Abdollahian as saying during his meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths in Geneva: “Unfortunately, the recent earthquake that struck Syria exacerbated the harsh humanitarian conditions in some areas of this country. He added that it is necessary to lift the siege imposed on them in order to improve the humanitarian conditions of  Syrians.

Abdollahian pointed to the humanitarian aid provided by Iran to Syria after the recent earthquake. He said that as in the past, Tehran is ready to continue cooperation with the United Nations and the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to contribute to improving the health and humanitarian conditions in Syria.

Regarding the situation in Yemen, Abdullahian said: “From a political point of view, the war must be stopped, and the most important initiative regarding this country is the lifting of the blockade.”

In turn, Griffiths expressed during the meeting his optimism about the positive effects of the recent political developments in Arab relations with Syria, and facilitating the delivery of aid to it, pointing out that the region needs a complete strategy to achieve lasting peace in Yemen.
