United Nations Day, super powers continue to violate the Charter to serve their agendas

New York (ST): At a time when the world celebrates the United Nations Day, the annual event for the entry into force of its Charter in 1945 and its principles relating to the political settlement of disputes between states, the international organization faces challenges that prevent the achievement of the goals for which it was established, foremost among which is the continuation of some Western countries in violating the Charter and targeting countries that do not follow suit in their orbit to implement its political agendas.

On October 31, 1947, the General Assembly decided that October 24 of each year would be United Nations Day, the day on which the Charter of the International Organization entered into force in 1945. Then the Assembly recommended in 1971 that member states celebrate it at the national level. With the aim of gaining the support of the peoples and introducing them to the objectives of the organization set forth in Article 1 of the Charter, to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations and to achieve international cooperation, in addition to introducing the principles of the organization set forth in Article 2 of the Charter, which is the equality of sovereignty among all its members and good faith in the commitments they took on themselves under the Charter, and abstain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state and not to interfere in the internal affairs of states.

 

Syria, a founding member of the United Nations, participated in drafting the charter with a delegation headed by Ambassadors Fares El-Khoury and Farid Zein El-Din, who drafted Article 78 of the charter, which states that “the trusteeship system shall not be applied to territories that have become members of the United Nations.” This article contributed to the independence of many countries and raised the number of United Nations countries from 51 to 193.

In a message on the occasion of United Nations Day, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the countries of the world to strive to end the conflicts that increase tension in our world, explaining that (the Covid-19 pandemic), conflicts, hunger, poverty and climate emergencies remind us that our world is far from perfect, but it also clarifies that solidarity is the only way forward.

He stressed that the values that have been the driving force of the United Nations Charter over the past 76 years, namely peace, development, human rights and opportunities for all, do not have an expiration date.

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said in a statement: By the way, the founding fathers of the United Nations laid down in its charter the basic objectives and principles of interaction between states and their commitment to them is the only way for humanity to advance towards building a more just, prosperous and secure world and prevent the outbreak of new world wars, noting that there are increasing attempts today to revise the provisions of international law enshrined in the Charter and to promote the so-called rules-based order. Our common task is to defend the Charter of the United Nations and to affirm our full commitment to the central and coordinating role of the United Nations in international affairs.

China, in turn, affirmed its support for the international system centered around the United Nations, pledged to make greater contributions to advancing the noble cause of the United Nations, and will continue to play its role in building world peace, contribute to global development, defend the international system, work unswervingly to advance the rule of international law, and fully support the United Nations in playing a central role. in international affairs, support pluralism and promote global development.

For its part, the European Union stressed in a statement by the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell that the multilateralism on which the United Nations is based is the most effective way to contribute to peace, security and human rights.
