United Nations: conditions in Gaza Strip are catastrophic

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned that the situation in the Gaza Strip has become catastrophic, noting that the water shortage there threatens the lives of more than two million people, after the public water station and networks stopped working.

Commissioner-General of UNRWA  Philippe Lazzarini confirmed in a statement reported by RIA  Novosti Agency that fuel must be transported to Gaza immediately, because more than two million people are at risk due to water shortages, calling for the immediate lifting of the blockade imposed on humanitarian aid in Gaza  Strip.

He pointed out that there is “an urgent need to provide people with safe drinking water, because if this is not done, people will begin to die from severe dehydration, including children, the elderly, and women.

Lazzarini’s remarks came  after the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stressed the need to ensure immediate humanitarian access   throughout Gaza to bring fuel, food and water to all those in need.

He said  “Even war has rules,” stressing the need to respect international humanitarian law and human rights law and protect civilians.
