UNHCR called for lifting sanctions imposed on Syria

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR ) called for the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Syria to revitalize its economy and ensure the return of basic services, particularly as the former regime, which, was the main reason for imposing these sanctions has disappeared.

UNHCR spokesman Willem Spindler said in a statement to the Turkish Anadolu Agency, “if we all want Syrians to be able to return to their country, we must make the economic conditions in Syria appropriate and conducive to this return.”

Spindler called for lifting sanctions on Syria, noting that “governments were imposing sanctions because of the old regime, but it has ended now, therefore, there should be no reason for the sanctions to continue.”

Spindler indicated that the Commission is working to ensure that the return of Syrians to their country is voluntary.

He stressed the importance of ensuring stability in Syria and rebuilding the infrastructure to achieve this.
