Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) vote in favor of Palestine’s bid to become a full UN member.
President Abbas said that the vote is consistent with the international consensus to isolate the Israeli occupation along with its grave crimes and violations of UN resolutions.
According to WAFA News Agency, Abbas asserted that the overwhelming vote in favor of the resolution serves as conclusive evidence that the world stands united behind the values of justice, freedom and peace embodied in the Palestinian cause and against ongoing Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.
President Abbas vowed that the State of Palestine would pursue its bid to obtain full membership in the United Nations through a UN Security Council resolution and re-invite the states that have not recognized it to do so.
He called on the US administration to retreat from taking sides with the Israeli occupation and settler-colonialism, respect the will of the states and peoples who voted in favor of the resolution and refrain from casting the veto to confront international legitimacy and the right embodied by the just Palestinian cause.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the overwhelming vote and international consensus in the United Nations General Assembly affirming the right of the State of Palestine to full UN membership and additional privileges in the UN and its various institutions and bodies.
In a press release, the Ministry stressed that this vote confirms that Palestine meets all the requirements set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, particularly Article 4, thus affirming its eligibility for full membership in the United Nations.
The ministry stressed that today’s vote is a clear message by the international community of the natural, legal, and historical right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, their aspirations for liberation and independence and the right to live on their land in security and peace like other peoples of the world.
For its part, the Palestinian resistance considered the General Assembly’s decision as an affirmation of the international support in the confrontation of the US will to support the war of extermination waged by the Israeli occupation against Palestine. The resistance called on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and adopt a resolution that recognizes the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations and to work seriously to stop the massacres that are being committed by the fascist Israeli occupation in Gaza Strip in violation of all the laws on which the United Nations Charter was built.
