UNGA’s Third Committee adopts a resolution supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination

The UN General Assembly’s Thirds Committee (the social, humanitarian affairs and human rights committee) on Friday voted in favor of a resolution supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The resolution was adopted by a majority of 168 countries that voted in favor of it. 4 countries as well as the Israeli occupation entity opposed it, while 9 countries abstained from voting, according to the Palestinian WAFA News Agency.

The resolution reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to establish their own independent state. It also urged all countries, concerned agencies and organizations of the United Nations to continue supporting and assisting the Palestinian people to regain their right to self-determination as soon as possible.

It stressed the need for putting an immediate end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories based on the relevant UN resolutions.

Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Riyad Mansour affirmed that the support of the overwhelming majority for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination reflects the experience of these countries and their struggle against colonialism. He indicated that as these countries have achieved their freedom and independence, Palestine will also achieve independence, and will take its natural place among the nations as an independent state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.
