UNGA adopts Palestinian draft resolution seeking ICJ’s opinion on the consequences of the Israeli occupation

The UN General Assembly this dawn adopted with majority a Palestinian draft resolution calling on the International Court of Justice to give its legal opinion on the consequences of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

According to WAFA News Agency, 87 counties voted in favor of the resolution, while 25 opposed it and 53 abstained from voting.

Speaking at the end of the vote, Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Riyad Mansour thanked the countries that supported the resolution, which included all the Arab and Islamic countries, Russia and China.

“With that vote, the United Nations had requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the violation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, occupation, settlement expansion and annexation, which came one day after the formation of the Israeli government, whose agenda is topped by the issue of settlement expansion,” said Mansour.

The Palestinian Presidency today welcomed the vote of the United Nations General Assembly in favor of the resolution, saying that the vote “is evidence of the world’s support for our people and their inalienable historical rights.”

Abu Rudeineh said that time has come for Israel to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people.

“The world must shoulder its responsibilities and implement the resolutions of international legitimacy, and everyone must stop the double standards,” he added, according to WAFA.
