UNFPA says 31% of Syria’s population aged 10-24

The Assistant Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Syria Mr. Omar Ballan has announced the launch of economic, social and demographical survey in the country.

He clarified that the National Center for Statistics drew up a plan two months ago to carry out the survey, which is due to be completed next March.

His remark was made during a workshop held Monday in cooperation with Information Ministry in the ‘Cham’ Hotel in Damascus to talk about the activities of the UNFPAin Syrian provinces.

“The UNFPA supports the National Center for Statistics to carry out the survey in order to get accurate numbers,” Mr. Ballan said without giving any details about the mechanism of carrying out the survey.

The official news agency (SANA) quoted Mr. Ballan as saying that the program of cooperation signed between Syria and the UNFPA for the two years 2016-2017 focuses on reproductive health, gender-based violence and supporting youth.

On her part, the official in charge of youths in the UNFPA Mrs. Reem Yajari affirmed that 31% of Syria’s populations are aged between 10 and 24 years, according to the Damascus-based al-Watan newspaper.

“We are working on enhancing youths’ capabilities and social cohesion through carrying out projects. The number of the projects carried out in Damascus province reached up to 16, while there are 24 projects being carried out in Homs and Tartous provinces,” she said.

Since 2011, a foreign-backed terror war has been waged on Syria targeting its people, army, civilization and infrastructures in accordance with the US-Zionist plot that aims to fragment the region and to have hegemony over its wealth.

About 360.000 foreign terrorists from 93 countries came to fight against the Syrians from April 2011 till January 2016, according to the German Firil Center for Studies. While media reports have confirmed that Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, the U.S., France, Britain and Israel support – by all means-terrorist organizations operating in Syria.
