UN warns of repercussions of any Israeli ground invasion of Lebanese territories

New York, (ST) – The United Nations warned today of the consequences of any Israeli occupation ground invasion of Lebanese territories and the continuation of their attacks on it.

AP quoted the spokeswoman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, “Liz Throssell”, as saying in a press statement: Armed violence in Lebanon is escalating, which has major consequences for civilians.

She referred to the organization’s fears that a large-scale ground invasion in Lebanon will exacerbate the suffering.

For its part, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) warned in a statement that any Israeli invasion of Lebanon constitutes a violation of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

UNIFIL called for re-commitment to Security Council resolutions and international legitimacy as a way to restore stability to the region.
