UN, US, Russia Meet for Syria Talks in Geneva Ahead of Global Conference

GENEVA- UN, US and Russian delegates are meeting in Geneva, Switzerland,  ahead of the planned international conference on Syria, the Voice of Russia website reported on Wednesday.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and President Putin’s special representative on Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov held a preliminary meeting with UN Syria Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi at the Palace of Nations before the trilateral summit. They were later joined by American negotiators, including Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Elizabeth Jones.

Representing the UN is alsoJeffrey Feltman, United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.

The mediators are set to outline prerequisites for the long-overdue conference on Syria, including its format and the list of participants, most notably representatives of the Syrian government and “opposition”.

Moscow has been willing to bring Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt into the mix, while the West remains adamant on excluding Tehran.
