UN Special Rapporteur: Unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people impede reconstruction efforts

Alena Douhan, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of the Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights has stressed that the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people affect human rights and impede early recovery and reconstruction efforts in Syria.

During a press conference on Thursday in Damascus, Douhan said that these coercive measures have badly affected the Syrian medical sector, through causing a scarcity in medical equipment and medicines of chronic diseases.

These sanctions also affected the availability of equipment and spare parts of machines necessary to rehabilitate and develop the drinking water and irrigation networks which would pose a serious threat to public health and food security, Douhan added.

Douhan pointed out that violating basic human rights can’t be justified by speaking about the good will of the unilateral measures, affirming that the international community should commit itself to assisting the Syrian people.
