The UN Security Council, in a statement Friday night, strongly condemned the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and called for “an immediate, thorough, transparent, fair and impartial investigation”.
The unanimous condemnation came hours after Israeli police charged and beat mourners at her funeral in Al-Quds Old City, AFP reported.
The statement stressed that journalists should be protected during wars and conflicts, because they are civilians.
According to diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the negotiations on the text of the statement were arduous, as the United States attempted to add some paragraphs targeting the countries that oppose its policies as a condition for condemning the Israeli occupation.
Abu Akleh, was martyred last Wednesday while she was covering the Israeli aggression on Jenin Camp. The Israeli forces shot her in the head, a crime that has received wide Arab And international condemnation and triggered calls for international investigation.
