The UN Security Council Friday evening held an emergency session to discuss recent developments in Lebanon.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the bombing of communication devices in Lebanon, stressing that they are a violation of international law.
Agence France-Presse quoted Türk as saying during a Security Council session requested by Algeria after the Israeli cyber aggression on Lebanon that “International law prohibits the bombing of civilian devices.”
Türk added that committing acts of violence aimed at spreading terror among civilians is a war crime.”
The Algerian Representative at the UN Security Council condemned Israel’s crime of blowing up wireless communication devices in Lebanon and described it as a violation of the UN Charter.
“We support Lebanon and salute the steadfastness of the Lebanese people and the way the Lebanese government has dealt with this crisis,
China’s representative at the Security Council said that the explosion of thousands of communication devices at the same time in Lebanon shocked China.
He stressed that “history has never heard of such an incident, which is a violation of international law and it shows contempt for the laws and it deserves condemnation”.
He pointed out that everyone now realizes that whoever committed this crime and blew up the communication devices in Lebanon must be held accountable.
Today, “Israel” launched a raid in Beirut and we are concerned about the risk of war breaking out, he went on to say, affirming the need to take practical steps to prevent “Israel” from continuing its aggression.
For his part, the Lebanese Caretaker Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib said that what happened in Lebanon is targeting an entire people, and if this terrorist act passes without serious action by the Security Council, the council’s credibility will be in imminent danger.
Bou Habib pointed out that “no one in the world is safe anymore after the Israeli aggression on innocent civilians in Lebanon.
Russia’s representative to the Security Council said that the crimes committed in public places in Lebanon constitute a terrorist act that threatens the Middle East region.
“We condemn the aggressive acts of “Israel” which does not hide its involvement in the bombing of Beirut.
“Israel” would not have resorted to this type of terrorism without the support of the United States, the Russian envoy clarified, stressing the urgent need to expose the source of the explosive devices in Lebanon as it is essential to the investigation required to determine the supply chain used.
