UN Security Council Condemns Terrorist Bombings that Targeted Sayyidah Zaynab District in Damascus Countryside
WASHINGTON – The UN Security Council on Monday condemned the triple bombing attack that rocked the Sayyidah Zaynab district in Damascus Countryside on Sunday killing dozens and wounding tens of innocent people.
The so-called Islamic State (IS or ISIL) extremist group has claimed responsibility for the bombings which coincided with the start of the Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva.
A statement, reported by the Chinese “Xinhua” News Agency, said that “the members of the UN Security Council conveyed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people of Syria.”
Expressing grave concern over “ISIL” elements, the council condemned “the negative impact of ISIL’s presence, violent extremist ideology and actions on the stability of Syria, neighboring countries and the region” and the “devastating humanitarian impact on the civilian populations.”
Moreover, the 15-member body reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
It underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, stressing that those responsible for these terrorist attacks should be held accountable.
On Sunday, takfiri terrorists detonated a car bomb at the bus station in Koua Soudan area in Sayyidah Zaynab neighborhood and after people gathered to help the injured, two suicide bombers with explosive belts blew themselves up at the site.
