UN Security Council Condemns Terrorist Attack on Russia’s Embassy in Damascus

UNITED NATIONS-The UN Security Council has condemned the terrorist attack on the Russian embassy in Damascus, insisting that those responsible should be brought to justice, according to Lithuanian UN Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite.

Itar Tass quoted the diplomat of Lithuania, which currently chairs the UN Security Council as saying that “the members of the Security Council strongly condemned today’s terrorist attack against Russian Federation Embassy in Damascus, Syria, inflicting serious material damage.”

All the 15 members of the Security Council “recalled the fundamental principal of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, including under 1961 Vienna convention on diplomatic relations,” she said.

The members of the Security Council have called for taking “all appropriate steps” to prevent “any attack on diplomatic offices.” They underlined the need to bring perpetrators of these acts to justice.

According to the Syrian news agency SANA, two mortar shells hit the building of the Russian embassy in Damascus on Tuesday, causing only material damage.

Spokesperson for the embassy Asyat Ibrahimova told SANA the shells only caused material damage, adding that the embassy is operating as usual.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs vehemently denounced the terrorist attack on its embassy, calling upon the international community and all sides that have influence on the extremists in Syria to put pressure on terrorists as to stop them from committing such crimes and adopting armed violence in general.

The Ministry expressed condemnation of the terrorists and their backers and expressed solidarity with the Syrian authorities in its efforts to counter terrorism on its soil.
