Najat Rushdi, the Deputy UN Envoy to Syria, warned today that the suspension of US food aid to Syria threatens to have devastating humanitarian consequences, urging the international community to act now as the lives of Syrians are at stake.
Rushdi stated on her account on the platform “X”: “The World Food Programme warns that this could be a death sentence for millions who are already facing severe hunger,” noting that nearly one and a half million Syrians who are still recovering from over a decade of conflict and ongoing instability now face the risk of losing essential food assistance.
She explained that, in addition, life-saving food support will be cut for more than 50,000 women and children, threatening their health, recovery, and survival.
She said: “This is not just a humanitarian crisis; it is a blow that undermines stability in an already fragile region, at a time when Syrians need global solidarity more than ever.”
Rushdi warned that suspending this aid will deepen suffering and fuel instability, adding: “The international community must act now. The lives of Syrians are at stake.”
