Tehran – The UN resident coordinator in Iran Gary Lewis called for international focus on the proposal of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani concerning a world free of violence.
He made the remarks while talking to IRNA on Sunday prior to the visit of the UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson to Iran on October 26-30.
He said the proposed plan offered by the Iranian President is in compliance with the United Nations Charter.
He further expressed hope that the world countries would pay due attention to the plan.
He noted that the proposed plan which advocates a world free of violence and extremism stresses the mandate of the global organization that entails spread of peace in the world.
As to Iran’s UN history, he said Tehran became a member of the United Nations in 1945 when the organization was first established.
He pointed out that the international organization has been operating in Iran since then, adding that it currently has 18 offices working here in such areas as education, poverty elimination, healthcare and environment.
Abadi’strip highlights Iran’s indisputable role in region
On the other hand, ‘Iran Daily’ on Sunday commenting on the recent trip of
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to Iran, said that his trip, which coincided with visits by other high-ranking officials from some countries highlight Iran’s indisputable role in the region.
The trips by the top foreign officials to Tehran were aimed at holding talks on regional issues, in particular, the ISIL crisis and Takfiri groups’ operations in the Middle East, underscored the English-language paper in its Opinion column.
Although Iran has refused to participate in the international military coalition against ISIL, it plays an active part in the fight against terrorist groups. The scope of Iran’s influence in the region and its role is a reality that cannot be ignored, added the paper.
The choice of Iran as the first destination for foreign trip by the Iraqi leader, to foster ties between both neighbors, indicates that Baghdad attaches much importance to Tehran. Such visits by both Iranian and Iraqi officials have always been fruitful, believes the paper.
Therefore, it is highly expected that Abadi’s trip would have positive results, especially at a time when Iran is playing a useful role in fighting ISIL and helping Iraq restore peace and security. This is a reality that many political and social figures in Iraq have pointed to. They believe Iran’s diplomatic efforts and military cooperation with the Iraqi army and volunteer forces have been effective, it added.
Abadi’s delegation included several key ministers which shows cooperation is being promoted in many areas including economic, trade, oil and security and the scale is becoming even vaster. Ties between the two neighbors are heavily influenced by political developments. However, along with political and security deals, Iran and Iraq have taken important steps to expand trade and economic ties.
Iraq’s major economic policies focus on developing the private sector and attracting foreign investment. That’s why it signed a $300-million agreement with Iran to facilitate the import of commodities and services from its neighbor, noted the daily.
Ministers accompanying Abadi represent various Iraqi social and political groups and their presence in Tehran indicates that political parties have a positive attitude toward improving cooperation with Iran and support the government’s decisions in this regard, concluded the daily.
Dabbagh is the representative of the government of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in Iran.
