UN Climate Change Conference COP28 kicks off in Dubai with the participation of Syria

The activities of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) UNFCCC were launched on Thursday in the Expo City Dubai with the participation of the Syrian delegation. The event will continue until the 12th of next December.

Syria’s Prime Minister Hussein Arnous arrived this afternoon in the United Arab Emirates, where he heads the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic participating in the Global Climate Action Summit, as part of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

The Emirates News Agency reported that “COP28”, the largest climate event in the world hosted by the UAE, registered a record number of requests to attend in the Blue and the Green Zones, reaching 500,000 participants, with more than 97,000 participants in the Blue Zone and 400,000 in the Green Zone.

The participants, who are ministers and representatives from non-governmental organizations, the private sector, indigenous peoples and youth, will contribute to reshaping global climate action, while more than 180 heads of state and government from around the world will attend the event.

“COP28” constitutes an effective platform for achieving the highest climate ambitions, promoting sustainable economic and social development, and providing an opportunity for all countries, sectors and groups of society to cooperate and unify efforts, especially at a time when the importance and necessity of global climate action is growing.

The conference witnesses the first global outcome of progress in the goals of the Paris Agreement reached at the “COP21” conference, while the “COP28” presidency focuses on achieving ambitious negotiating results through a practical agenda to transform pledges and promises into tangible progress in addressing the climate crisis by providing a response comprehensive and outcome-critical work that contributes to getting the world back on track for climate action.

The UAE is leading a process aimed at reaching consensus among all parties and agreeing on a clear  map to accelerate the desired progress across all climate action topics, based on the COP28 presidency’s action plan.

This plan is based on four pillars: accelerating the achievement of an orderly, fair and logical transition in the energy sector,  Developing climate financing mechanisms, protecting people and nature, improving lives and livelihoods, and supporting the previous pillars by fully including everyone in the conference’s work system.

The COP28 presidency team is working to build global understandings in order to achieve the primary goal of preserving the possibility of achieving the goal of avoiding global temperature rises exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The conference witnesses an innovative program specializing in relevant topics that extends for two weeks and provides the opportunity for all concerned parties to make positive contributions, within the framework of including those who are interested in participating in climate action.
