NEW YORK, (ST)- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Monday that an agreement on the creation of a committee to discuss the Syrian constitution was reached, hailing the Syrian government’s efforts to conclude this agreement.
The UN Chief’s announcement came on the sidelines of the Climate Action Summit in New York and after the talks held in Damascus today between Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen.
“I firmly believe that the launching of a Syrian-organized and Syrian-led Constitutional Committee can be the beginning of a political path towards a solution” Guterres told reporters, noting that the solution should be in accordance with UN Resolution No.2254 which is based on the strong commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
He made it clear that his special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, would bring the committee together in the coming weeks.
