UN Chief Reaffirms Golan Is a Syrian Arab Land Occupied by Israel

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari has informed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres of Syria’s refusal and condemnation of the recent statements made by US President Donald Trump in which he announced intention to recognize “Israel’s sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan.

During his meeting on Sunday with Guterres, al-Jaafai said that the US administration doesn’t have any right or mandate to decide the fate of the occupied Syrian Golan.

He added that any American procedure that targets the right of the Syrian Arab Republic to restore occupied Golan or aims to undermine its sovereignty over it is an illegal act and a blatant violation of the US own commitments to the rules of the UN Charter and the principles of the international law.

Al-Jaafari pointed out that the United Nations, through many resolutions by the UN General Assembly and through the Security Council’s resolution 497 for 1981, has affirmed that Golan is an occupied  Syrian land and that any procedures adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities regarding this occupied area are null and void and have no legal effect.

The Syrian senior diplomat called on the UN Chief to issue a clear official statement in which he clarifies and affirms the position of the UN on the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan.

He reiterated that all the Syrian people are now more than ever determined to reject the American stance and confront the Israeli occupation by all possible and internationally guaranteed means.

Guterres: Golan is a Syrian land occupied by Israel

On his part, Guterres, reaffirmed that the stance of United Nations as well as his personal stance are firm and based on international legitimacy resolutions which clearly say that “Golan is a Syrian Arab land occupied by Israel.”

Guterres, who usually doesn’t comment on statements published on social media, said that the dangerous stance issued by the American president provoked him to ask the UN Chief’s official spokesman to issue an official statement confirming the UN firm stance on the Golan as being a Syrian Arab land occupied by Israel, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, particularly resolution No. 497 of 1981.

“The spokesman’s statements represent my own stances as a UN Secretary General,” Guterres pointed out.
