UN chief condemns unprecedented escalation of Israeli bombardment on Gaza, demands immediate ceasefire

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday sharply criticized the unprecedented escalation of Israeli bombardment on Gaza and urged an immediate ceasefire.

“Instead of the pause” he had expected, there has been “an unprecedented escalation of the bombardments and their devastating impacts, undermining the referred humanitarian objectives,” Guterres said on a visit to Doha.

He expressed his concern about the occupation’s cutting off communications in Gaza Strip, as well as about United Nations employees who are in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid.

He reiterated his “strong” appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and a delivery of humanitarian relief that meet the dire need of the population in Gaza, Guterres said.

Yesterday, Guterres warned that without a fundamental change, the people in Gaza will face an unprecedented avalanche of human suffering. He said “everyone must assume their responsibilities. This is a moment of truth. History is judging us all”.
