UN: 70% of Victims of Israeli Aggression Against Gaza Are Children and Women

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has confirmed that about 70 percent of the victims of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip are children and women, in systematic violation of the basic principles of international humanitarian law.

In a report on the violations of occupation in the Gaza Strip between November 2023 and April 2024, UNHCR stated: “The International Court of Justice has in a series of orders on interim measures affirmed Israel’s international obligations to prevent, protect and punish acts of genocide and associated prohibited practices.”

For his part, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stressed the need for the occupation to comply fully and immediately with international obligations and said: “this matter has become more important and urgent given the overall behavior described in the report, and taking into account the latest developments, including Israel’s operations in northern Gaza and its legislation affecting the activities of UNRWA.

Turk stressed the need to hold the occupation accountable for committing serious violations of international law through credible and impartial judicial bodies, calling on UN member states to  act to prevent the brutal crimes committed by the occupation in the Gaza Strip, support the work of accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, and prosecute the perpetrators of crimes under international law and in line with international standards.
