Ugandan President: Europe adopts double standards in climate file

On November 9th, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni asserted that Europe is adopting shameful double standards and hypocrisy towards Africa over climate change and energy policies.

“We will not allow Africa’s progress to fall victim to Europe’s failure to achieve its climate goals,” Museveni was quoted by AFP as saying in a post on social media.

He denounced the moral bankruptcy of Europe that uses fossil fuels in Africa to produce its energy, while refusing to use fossil fuels to produce its energy in Europe.

Museveni added: “We will not accept a rule that applies to them and another to us,“noting that Europe’s inability to achieve its climate goals should not be the problem of Africa.

Last February, United Nations climate experts confirmed that millions of people in Africa would face drought, disease and displacement due to global warming.

It is noteworthy that Africa contributes the lowest percentage of carbon dioxide emissions in the world among the continents, representing 3 percent of global emissions.
